Fist of Fury Packs a Noongar Punch
Intrigued? We thought so ...
That’s right, we’re taking the Bruce Lee classic and dubbing it in Noongar!
Fist of Fury Noongar Daa is a unique cinematic experience and will be essential viewing. Noongar performers will star as voice actors and dub the original dialogue of the dynamite 1970's Kung Fu film, Fist of Fury. You’ll be able to see it at Lotterywest Films at the iconic UWA Somerville cinema.
Tell me more!
The idea for this project came to our film programmer Tom Vincent and Artistic Associate Kylie Bracknell (Kaarljilba Kaardn) in April 2019 after being inspired by Navajo Star Wars, a Navajo dubbed release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. They thought, what if we created something similar in Noongar?
'Bruce Lee perfected Kung Fu and mastered life. He was a moorditj (solid) philosopher who led by example. Why not link the most prominent non-white film star - much more than an actor - of the 1970s with Noongar language? He’s a legend, a credit to the human race, and our people respect his journey, his art and his legacy.' Kylie Bracknell [Kaarljilba Kaardn]
Why Bruce Lee?
Bruce Lee is more than an icon, he’s a representation of humanity. Throughout his life he was a leader who challenged the stereotypes of Asian men and culture in cinema. In the 1970s, only a few years after Aboriginal people were counted as citizens of their own country in Australia, Bruce Lee was a unique and pioneering global star, and a serious challenge to the mainstream. His on screen (and off screen) character was strong and stood up against injustice making him a true ally in the fight against racism.
'Bruce Lee was like a super hero for us Noongar mob that grew up in that era, we all thought that we were Bruce Lee when we’d get into fights. Because of him, we grew up tough.' Barry McGuire
